Old eating habits

I noticed the past week while housesitting for my parents that old eating habits, such as grazing, have started to creep back into my life. It scares me quite a bit, though I caught it pretty quickly. I just don't get it. I'm losing weight like crazy and I still sabotaged by engaging in poor eating behavior!! It just goes to prove that having gastric bypass doesn't all of a sudden make everything easy. It's not sunshine and roses, because I'm STILL me. . . all the good and the bad. So. . . I'm going to have to get a handle on this soon!! I'm not even close to being done losing! I also haven't weighed in a week because I haven't been home, so I'm a little nervous about weighing in the morning!!

  1. I've always wondered about that! I've always wondered once someone has that surgery how the "cravings" magically go away. I've heard of people losing just as much weight without having the surgery just by changing their eating habits but I thought maybe if you had the surgery something must change to make you stop whatever made you gain weight in the first place. does that make sense???

  2. Yep. I think most people believe that it is a magic cure all. The thing is that I am the same person after surgery that I was before, the only difference is that I got a little help with restriction. I still have to exercise and follow the rules to be successful. I realize that because I work out hard and have been following the rules I have lost about 50 pounds more than the doctor expected after nine months. It is easier to follow rules and ignore cravings when you see the weight come off; however, those same habits can sneak back in overnight!! The key, just like someone who hasn't had the surgery, is to notice it and deal with the WHY right away. For me, it's usually an emotional reason and that is true this time. Getting ready to start a new job and worrying about money, makes me want to eat!!

  3. Another thing I've always heard is how people turn their focus to something else. Oprah's done several shows about weight loss surgery and how the people become "addicted" to something else since they are restricted by food. Usually it's porn, gambling, or alcohol (NOT saying that about you) but sometimes it's things like shopping excessively or talking on the phone for hours. Interesting how the brain really works!

And no matter what you have to be so proud of yourself for all you've accomplished!!!!!

  4. It's true, transfer addictions are common if people don't get proper help. I have been seeing an eating disorder therapist for almost two years, so I'm not as worried about that as someone who hasn't done as much work. I can see how I could go that way with exercise though!! I never liked alcohol enough to have that be an issue, shopping could be a possibility though, LOL.

Oprah has issues with people who view this as a quick fix and who don't do any of this work, which is the most important part of a major lifestyle change. We are still the same people we were before UNLESS we put in the work to change the way we reacted to pressures in life!!
